Browser for displaying websites

Definition

A browser or web browser is a special computer programme for displaying websites on the Internet or data and documents in general. Browsing the web and successively retrieving any hyperlinks as links between web pages with such a programme is called web surfing.

Web browsers can display other types of documents besides HTML pages. A browser represents the user interface for a web application.

How it works

After calling up a certain URL, the browser reads in an HTML file on the target computer. Basically, these are pure text files that are subject to a certain syntax so that they can be read as such by the browser.

With a valid syntax, HTML files can contain references to graphics, videos, URLs, etc. in addition to (formatted) text, which are offered by the browser as links or displayed directly by the browser. The browser ultimately processes a text file.

Different browsers interpret HTML files differently, so there is no final certainty whether pages are displayed in the same way in all browsers. A web designer spends 30% of his development time adapting to the different browsers.
